This study examined the outcome of solution-focused therapy(SFT) for perpetrators and woman victims of spousal violence focusing on positive aspects of the self and functioning, as an approach being differentiated from previous problem-focused interventions. Noting a lack of an outcome measure appropriate to the SFT, this study first developed self-positivity scale, then including this scale as an outcome measure, examined the outcome of the SFT for the perpetrators and women victims involved with spousal violence. As results, in SFT group of the perpetrators, multiple perspective was decreased, a sense of responsibility for violence was decreased, but psychological and physical violence was decreased; while among nonparticipants intimacy and communication in interpersonal relationship was increased. In individual SFT for the women, a sense of hope in both participants and nonparticipants was improved; for the nonparticipants, the levels of anxiety and somatization significantly decreased, but in participants the levels of anxiety, depression, and somatization tended to decrease but was not statistically significant. The negative perspective towards marital relations became stronger both in nonparticipants significantly and in participants approaching to the significance level p<.05; nonparticipants showed a higher level of improvement in interpersonal relationship, but not among participants. Overall, the outcome of the SFT for these women in shelter was not effective as much as expected compared to the nonparticipants. According to these results, issues in the findings, methodology of outcome study of the SFT for participants of spousal violence were discussed and utility of this study and implications for further study were suggested.
