Environmental paradigm has become one of the important issues in the 21st century, and the environment has become worse as humans keep on expanding their territory and continuously going through changes in culture and technology. Many countries from around the world lead people to voluntarily and actively popularize environmental-friendly architectures according to the market economy’s principle, and the discussions and application of environmental-friendly architecture is becoming more active in Korea. The consumer’s awareness of the quality in the environment and their lives are changing and their demand for it has become more specific. As a result, research of environmental-friendly designs from Korea and abroad has evolved from being talked only within professionals, to implementing the green building validation system. From this standpoint, there has to be a clear recognition of what environmental-friendly environmental interior design is, and actively pursue it. In this research, despite the heightened awareness of the importance of interior environment which can vitalize environmental-friendly architecture, because Korea does not have a systematic approach to the technical and aesthetic plans, this research will study the design plans for environmental-friendly interior space through the examples of America’s distinguished environmental-friendly architecture. Through the environmental-friendly architecture certification system of foreign countries like LEED, this research will look at the detailed strategy of sustainable guidelines that can be implemented into the interior environment through America’s USGB’s (U.S. Green Building Council) LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System. Moreover, this research will study how instances of environmental-friendly certification, guide, and strategy were successfully applied to architecture, and by analyzing environmental-friendly elements by topic, see what elements can be applied to the environmental interior design. The architecture targeted for study are the eco-friendly certified architecture in Missouri.
By accepting the changes coming from the environmental-friendly paradigm, and providing the environmental interior design guide to improve the value of natural interior environment, it became possible for designers in the 21st century to easily make decisions for an environmental-friendly design.
The following is the results. From the view of energy use and the environment, environmental-friendly resources that have been developed by America and used in the targeted architecture used materials that emitted low amounts of VOCs that causes sick building syndrome. By using new and recycled materials, it reduced environmental pollution, created less harm to the human body, was economical, and had many products with great design. With the enhancement of developing and correctly understanding newly and recycled materials, I was able to research and analyze great design. From the spatial point, by providing sunny areas like atelier, courtyard, veranda, and rooftop garden between the interior and exterior space, it created a connection between the architecture’s interior and exterior. It also made it possible to enjoy nature, support the relationship with users, and helped create a harmony between the society and culture. The vines and moss used in the floor, ceiling, and walls of the interior to afforest the interior space. From the aesthetical point, the most basic and large way of approaching it is by preserving the natural scenery and connecting the construction space with it. It is predicted that by presenting the natural resources of the ground to the interior, it will bring the nature into the interior.
