This research‘s aim is to study the urban regeneration model with new forms of art through the media art and alley media art created in the city. Therefore, it starts out on the understanding that it is necessary to develop distinct urban regeneration models in connection with ‘Cheonyeon and Chunghyun urban regeneration projects’ conducted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. Thus, this research can facilitate citizen' participation and partnerships, and attempts to develop a new urban regeneration model suitable for the digital age. The results are as follows.
First, we formed a 'U-Siety', a council for urban regeneration, with Seodaemun District Office and citizens, to create a road map of the project and to realize it. It laid the groundwork for this research. Participants of the 'U-Siety' are currently active as key activists for the 'Cheonyeon and Chunghyeon Urban Regeneration Project.' And they are also working on a local public offering related to 'Media Village' and a project called 'Chungjeongno Alley Media Project' that the university is promoting through research on the history of the alleys and augmented reality(AR).
Second, to explore the potential of storytelling of urban space in Chungjung-ro area, we explored the history and made a its story, and we together studied the possibility of space regeneration. Therefor, we prepared a sample of story archiving and created a cultural geography map and presented a model of cultural regeneration connecting it. They result from a fusion of art and urban research, with the meaning of the start-up of ‘Chungjung-ro Art & Culture Cluster.’
Third, this research attempted to develop the coursework on media art technology and its actual model, because this research is basically based on the understanding and utilization of media art. Through it, this research identified the manpower operating technology can be scaled up. These are the creative realization of urban media art and will be the basis for ongoing research.
This research was conducted with a goal of research on creative urban regeneration, based on urban media art and the creation of its real basis. Such urban regeneration is the work of connecting the urban environment with the creative artistry expressed by various forms of media. In urban media art, artists employ innovative objects of software and technology to create artwork. In addition, the matter of urban media art is determined not by the media, but by the material reality, space conditions, of a city or architecture that is the condition of production. Therefore, this study recognized that it is possible to perform the aesthetics of the urban environment by applying urban media art, which expand the realm of public art and social performance, to the alleys of Chungjung-ro. Such recognition will contribute greatly to the new realization of urban regeneration through further research and actual application.
