Kim Hee Gab, an old man, travels around the world to attend his daughter's wedding ceremony to be held in Germany, visiting a total of 10 countries. While he travels, as in a growth novel, Kim Hee Gap meets the customs and cultures of other countries, and not only finds the virtue of modernizing the fatherland, but also rediscovers the value and meaning of his fatherland. He also comes to learn about the activities of the overseas Koreans who live in other countries, and the development of Korea.
The movie The Land of Korea [Paldo-gangsan] (1968) is a government film that is produced to educate the necessity and justification of the discourse on modernization of the fatherland. For this purpose, citizens of other countries are arbitrarily called upon and served. In this film appeared many countries, including Japan, the United States, Brazil, Germany, France, Israel, Uganda, Vietnam, and etc. For these countries, different cultural characteristics are assigned respectively and play the role of model or lesson for the momentum of the modernization of the fatherland Korea. This paper discusses the internal and external situations where the past Korea were facing, the pending issues at the time, and how these issues were related with the characteristics assigned to the respective countries.
