Background & Purpose: Communication ability is one of the important factors which are included as daily activities. Difficulties in communication ability occur not only in geriatric patients but only in normal aging people. In addition, the difficulties are recognized by the elderly themselves as well as conversation partners. With aging, we observe changes in cognition, language, voice, speech, and hearing. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate and differentiate the abnormal elderly amon elderly people. Thus, purpose of the study was to develop an evaluation protocol using a tablet device for communication ability for elderly.
Methods: First, we developed contents of the evaluation protocol via literature review, item development, and program specification. Second, we administered the evaluation protocol to 487 normal elderly; Item reduction was performed; and app program was built based on the paper-pencil version of the evaluation protocol
Results: In both paper-pencil and app program version, five sections were included. First, client information, such as demographic information, disease history, health behaviors, socio-economic status, language daily living, and language history, was included. Second, pre-evaluation items to evaluate vision, hearing, motor literacy, depression, and Korean version-mini mental state examination were included. Third, speech items were spontaneous speech, picture description, vowel prolongation, DDK, vowel production, stop articulation, reading, repetition, counting, and singing. Language items were COWAT, BNT, verb naming, word definition, sentence comprehension, token test, and functional communication. Lastly, cognition section included attention, visual function, memory, organization, reasoning, problem solving, executive function, and pragmatics. The preliminary data indicated that most of the communication abilities have been significantly reduced with aging. Development of app program was done with registration of test item, item download, results upload, and data extraction.
Conclusion: The significance of the study is that it is the first attempt to develop app program to evaluate communication ability for the elderly. Further study is warranted to explore the validity of the app program.
