This study represents, in an interview form, in-depth and intensive understanding about korean composer Man-Bang Yi and his works, based on his life, his world of art, and base line data; deals with contemporary music of Korea influenced by individual composers by way of various oral statements; analyzes and represents Yi's positions in the history of music. In addition, this study connects the researcher’s point of view with that of the interviewee, while inquiring into the process of Yi’s growth as an artist, of the changes in and interpretations about his works based not just on his personal environment but also on the historical and sociocultural context which he lived in.
This study is made up of six time-variant characteristics: 1) Yi's childhood and youth in Geochang, 2) from undergraduate years in Seoul until before leaving for Germany, 3) years in Germany as a student, 4) in the 80’s after Yi's return from Germany 5) from the 90’s to now. Each phase deals with Yi's life and the world of his works respectively, with the whole study searching for the change of his critical mind and thinking system. What is more, in analyzing, organizing, and interpreting the oral statement, this study relocates and reconstitutes the oral data considering holistic plot of the context, still keeping the original meaning of the interviewee true and dynamic. At the end of this study is a bibliography containing chronology of Man-Bang Yi, list of his works, explanations of his works, published scores, albums and videos, various articles, pictures.
