Asian countries, including Korea, have indiscriminately introduced modern Western laws, systems, and successful cases to resolve rapid social changes and growing social conflicts. These Western examples help to understand universal social phenomena; however, their applications have many limitations in explaining conflicts and cooperation among Asian countries. As such, the research team conducted a study with the goal of developing the East Asian coexistence and collaboration model by comparing country cases after initial identification of Korea's conflict and cooperation as a referemce model.
During the first year, the team sought to trace the evolution and resilience of the Korean conflict and cooperation model by analyzing the interactions between government-private private-private, and intergovermental. Many case studies were conducted during this year.
In the second year, The East Asian Coexistence and Collaboration Survey was carried out with the goal of sharing the Korean model. The first joint survey on Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, and Korea was conducted in February 2018. The survey aimed to examine the possibility of applying Korean refrence model of conflict and cooperation to East Asia. Based on its findings, the characteristics of each country were compared, and the possibility of developing the model in East Asia was reviewed.
In the third year, a second survey was conducted. Following the second year, Indonesia had also been added as a targeted survey country. Workshops were held to develop the East Asian Coexistence and Collaboration Model and review its practical applicability in each country.
In the fourth year, this research team conducted activities to achieve the goal of the “Evolution and Diffusion of the East Asian Coexistence and Cooperation Model.” Specifically, based on the previous three years of research, efforts were undertaken to improve the Korean model. In addition, East Asian countries with similar social, cultural, and institutional attributes were classified and studied in details. An English-language book titled 「Collaborative Governance in East Asia」 was published in July 2020, showcasing the achievements of this study. Including 28 researchers from Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Indonesia, this book covers comparative studies on each country's social conflict and conflict management, cooperative relations between the government and citizens, and collaborative governance between governments.
Every year, the research team exceeded the target goal. Researchers published more than 100 academic papers throughout the last four years while also attending numerous domestic and foreign academic conferences to present their findings. The team plans to maintain and develop domestic and international academic networks centering on The East Asia Collaboration Center for continuous future research.
