Introduction
This research project consists firstly in systematically analyzing and organizing the data of Eastern and Western philosophy of religion concerning religious phenomena in the modern and contemporary eras on the basis of Schaeffler's 'transcendental philosophical-phenomenological' method, which encompasses religious studies and theology. Secondly, the project aims to provide the archived digital data to specialists, as well as the public by creating metadata. Finally, the project aims to establish a religious studies archive, named after Richard Schaeffler, a world-renowned German philosopher of religion at Sogang University. Through continuous research and sharing of such research both domestically and internationally, we aspire for the Richard Schaeffler Archive to perform a leading role in the researches of philosophy of religion. Hitherto, a scientific approach to religious phenomena has been conducted in the tradition of diverse religions and realm of religious studies. These previous approaches to religious phenomena revealed the scientific limitation in providing rational criteria for the religiosity in which one can engage in dialog among various religions in contemporary multi-religious societies. To solve this problem, and also broaden the horizon for our understanding of religious phenomena, our research seeks to systematically analyze, arrange, and archive in a database the concepts of Western and Eastern philosophy of religion concerning religious phenomena based on the new methodology of philosophy of religion, known as the ‘transcendental philosophical-phenomenological’ method. This project is meaningful and valuable in its attempt to seek a possibility of incorporating the methodology of Western philosophy of religion into Eastern philosophy of religion, and the religious context in Korea, and to compare and analyze religious phenomena. This philosophical research project is a new academic foundational study on religious phenomena, and this project is considered as a fundamental work that is urgently required in the theoretical and practical dimensions of religion. In this respect, this research project, which digitally archives various religious philosophical concepts on religious phenomena, will present a new research paradigm that uses a theory of religious philosophical system for religious phenomena as its norm. Moreover, by establishing the Richard Schaeffler Archive, we seek to continue to provide data not only to future academic generations and researchers in the field of philosophy of religion, but also to the academic circles worldwide. To efficiently archive and manage the database, the Foundation Research unit has opened a website dedicated to database (http://religionphildb.sogang.ac.kr/) and has systematically updated the search function of the database. It was designed to facilitate the retrieval of high-quality information. Original content (i.e., the Schaeffler documents) were also included. Metadata have been created in accordance with the design principles of Dublin Core. To improve database utilization, the keywords of philosophy of religion is divided into Western and Eastern categories and visualized as a word cloud. Furthermore, a "Top 10" keyword frequency ranking is presented in terms of concept, frequency, and related concepts to facilitate easy search.
Expect Effect / Research Utilization
The objective of this research project consists in systematically analyzing and organizing the data the Eastern and Western philosophy of religion concerning religious phenomena in the modern and contemporary eras on the basis of Schaeffler's philosophical methodology. Moreover our research seeks to provide the digital data to specialists and the public by creating metadata. The expected effects and plans for the utilization of the database in this project are summarized as follows. Firstly, our research project bears an important meaning in that it extends and applies the basic concepts of Western modern and contemporary philosophy of religion to religious phenomena in Eastern religion. Furthermore, this research will contribute to invigorating research in all field of humanities and social sciences in Korea by systematizing research data of philosophy of religion and the construction of a database. It will also lay a foundation for subsequent studies. Secondly, this research project seeks first to arrange the theories of the Eastern and Western philosophies of religion based on the ‘transcendental philosophical-phenomenological’ methodology, and to provide meaningful data to researchers and the public by creating metadata produced by the outcome of our research. Through this, our research will be able to provide raw materials for educational models that are applicable to each religion, and to contribute to the popularization of the humanities in respect to the philosophy of religion. In addition, it will also contribute to promoting the root idea of humanism, which is considered as the fundamental value of the humanities. Finally, in parallel to our theoretical work on materials of philosophy of religion, our research has been focused on establishing the Richard Schaeffler Archive, named after the world-renowned German philosopher of religion at Sogang University. With the establishment of the archive in the form of a digital database, we can continuously provide research output to specialists as well as the public. Moreover, by making the database accessible to both domestic and international researchers, it will invigorate active academic exchanges among scholars at the international level and contribute towards the globalization of Korean humanities in this field.
